MASPLAS 2006: Call for Papers

As in past years, submissions to MASPLAS may be either new work or previously published related work on the following topics:

MASPLAS solicits contributions of student research in programming languages and systems, a very broad area of Computer Science. Presentations should be at a level accessible to senior CS majors and/or beginning MS students. The length of the presentations will depend, in part, on the number of submissions we receive.

We will accept as many papers as possible, regardless of institution affiliation, limited by our scheduling constraints. All presenters at MASPLAS are graduate or undergraduate students, although the research presented can have involved faculty as well.

If we receive too many submissions, the faculty associated with institutions having multiple submissions will have to select a limited number (perhaps only one) of the papers for presentation, leaving the remaining papers for the poster session (if so desired by the authors). The manner of this selection will be left to the authors and their advisors rather than the organizers of MASPLAS.

If we receive more submissions than can be scheduled in a single day from different institutions, then we will choose between them according to the following guidelines:

All submitted papers corresponding to workshop presentations or posters at MASPLAS, will appear in both the workshop's printed proceedings and electronic proceedings.

PAPER/POSTER SUBMISSION PROCEDURES:

Authors interested in presenting a full paper or poster should submit a plain text or HTML abstract by Monday, March 20, 2006. The abstract should be less than one page. Submit abstracts using our convenient submission form.

We will notify authors of acceptance by Monday, April 3, 2006.

Final papers should be submitted via the final paper submission form by Friday, April 14, 2006. If you wish to use any presentation tools other than a projector for your own laptop, you should also let us know by this date.

Poster authors do not need to submit anything beyond the abstract. However, postscript or PDF files received by Friday, April 14, 2006, will be included on the web site. Identify the posters as MASPLAS posters as per instruction 2 for paper formatting below. Poster presenters must bring hard copies of their posters to the workshop.

PAPER FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Papers will appear in the printed proceedings and the electronic proceedings here. Papers are limited to a length of 10 pages. Since papers will be obtained individually, it is important that you follow the format directions below.

In an effort to balance the amount of work required by the program chair and the consistency of the proceedings, we have decided to let the authors determine the format of their paper with THREE exceptions, listed below. If possible, we suggest that authors use a two-column ACM proceedings style for the formatting of their papers. Detailed definition of the style in both Microsoft Word and Latex can be found here.

  1. Papers must be in either postscript (readable by ghostview) or PDF (readable by Adobe Acrobat Reader).
  2. The title page of the paper should contain the following:
    Proceedings of MASPLAS'06
    Mid-Atlantic Student Workshop on Programming Languages and Systems
    Rutgers University, April 29, 2006
    This reference may appear either across the top of the first page OR in footnote style at the bottom of the first page. Authors using the ACM conference proceedings style file for documents generated using Latex may include after the \author{...} statement the following:

    \toappear{Proceedings of MASPLAS'06 \
    Mid-Atlantic Student Workshop on Programming Languages and Systems \
    Rutgers University, April 29, 2006}
  3. Page numbers will be composed of TWO fields. The first field is your paper number (which you will receive when all abstracts have been submitted), and the second field is the page number within your paper. For example, if your paper number is 7 and your paper is 10 pages long, the pages should be numbered 7.1, 7.2, ..., 7.10 with a period as the separator between the two fields. For your convenience, a one-line Latex command to do this numbering is shown below:
    \def\thepage{YOUR-PAPER-NUMBER.\arabic{page}}
    Change YOUR-PAPER-NUMBER  appropriately and insert this line before the \begin{document}.
